Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on January 27, 1756 at Getreidegasse 9. Mozart's birthplace is considered one of the most visited museums in the world and displays the family home with documents and pictures as well as the master's instruments. Mozart lived at the former Hannibalplatz, now Makartplatz 8, from 1773 to 1780. Mozart's home presents exhibits about the life of the family, the history of the house and a collection of audiovisual documents.

This museum presents its exhibits in two buildings. Located in one of the most beautiful places in Salzburg, the new building on the Mönchsberg above the rooftops of the old town focuses on contemporary and modern art. The architecturally purist building displays international art on three levels as well as works from the museum's own collection in temporary exhibitions. The second location is the Rupertinum, a baroque old town house with a façade designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Here, contemporary and modern art can be seen in temporary exhibitions in the middle of the festival district.

The cathedral and Residenz form the historic center of the city of Salzburg. The archaeological excavations of a Roman villa, which was built in the late 2nd or early 3rd century over the remains of an older house, are impressive.
