Salzburg Museum

Distance: 5 km
The magnificent New Residence on Mozart Square has housed the Salzburg Museum since the summer of 2007. The museum"s fully new concept blends valuable objects of art, aesthetic presentations, interesting facts and multimedia installations into a harmonious whole. The Salzburg Museum is living proof that a modern museum can inform and yet at the same time entertain its visitors.

Salzburg - very personal
Not only rulers left their mark on the city and province of Salzburg over the centuries. The exhibitions on the first floor present the life , work and sphere of influence of interesting men and women from Salzburg working in the fields of art, architecture, science, literature, music, photography and handicrafts.

The Myth of Salzburg
The permanent exhibition on the second floor of the New Residence including the state rooms concentrates on Salzburg"s development in history, art and culture since the beginning of modern times. The information ranges from the absolute reign of the archbishops to painters in the Romantic period and their fascinating paintings of Salzburg"s world landscape to topical themes.

Archeology and Medieval Collection: Treasures from the archeological and medieval collections such as the Celtic jug, the helmet from Pass Lueg or the Gothic winged altar by the master of the "Virgo inter Virgines" are shown in the Mirror Hall on the 2nd floor.

Archeological finds from the excavations in the New Residence, including a painted Roman wall can be found in the Panorama Passage, an underground passage between the Salzburg Museum and the Panorama Museum. In addition, models of the city, a number of crafted objects and historic data portray Salzburg"s development from Roman times to the present.

The Kunsthalle (Art Hall) under the inner courtyard of the New Residence is a multipurpose, 500 m² hall equipped with a full-length illuminated ceiling. It is divided into two parts and serves as a venue for three special exhibitions each year.
